Power supply manufacturers have recently been addressing issues related to the RTX 50’s power distribution. The main technical challenge involves an uneven load across the pins, which can lead to overheating and even connector damage. In response, some companies have introduced cables equipped with temperature sensors. For example, FSP has developed a 12V-2×6 cable that incorporates a thermistor. This sensor monitors the temperature in real time at the GPU connector, and if it reaches around 110°C, it triggers an automatic shutdown of the power supply.
However, this solution comes with some limitations. The sensor in the new cable only measures the temperature at the GPU connector, leaving the power supply unit (PSU) connector unmonitored. As a result, even though the GPU may be protected from thermal damage, there is still a risk that the PSU connector could overheat and possibly melt. This partial protection means that while the new design can reduce some risks, it does not offer a complete safeguard for all components. With systems like the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 potentially being affected, industry experts are cautiously evaluating these developments. They are considering whether the solution could inadvertently lead to unexpected shutdowns or other issues in high-performance configurations.
Looking forward, it appears that more manufacturers might consider integrating similar sensor-based protection into their power supply cables. Although this approach represents a proactive attempt to mitigate overheating issues, it is clear that a comprehensive solution will likely require additional measures.
